Wyken Basin to Hillmorton

Friday 3 August

Getting out of our small, congested basin was the first task of the day. We had other boats in front, behind and alongside us, plus a plethora of weed only too willing to adorn the propellor! We emerged onto the North Oxford Canal just after 11.00am and had an uneventful journey to Hillmorton, mooring below the locks at just before 4.00pm.

The weather started off bright and sunny, with enough fluffy white clouds to provide occasional respite from the heat. By the time we moored up it had clouded over and there was a pleasant breeze.

We exchanged greetings at Hillmorton with the folk on a passing BCF boat, Ottawa, but they were not stopping here. I suspect we might see them again tomorrow.

While some swallows were still on the wing catching insects, others were gathering on the telephone wires ready for their long journey to Africa. Other avian observations included a whole rookery of rooks gleaning freshly harvested fields and a grey wagtail skimming so low over the canal, it nearly got its feet wet.
